I have a smoothie every morning for breakfast before heading to the gym. I’m always searching for things to add to my smoothie to give me some additional nutrients. If you are looking for ideas for smoothie add-ins that provide a nutrient boost, I’ve compiled some of my favorites.
Smoothie Add-Ins That Provide a Nutrient Boost
Depending on what nutrients you want to add to your smoothie will determine your nutrient-boosting choices. There are multiple ingredient choices for getting the nutrition you need, so mix and match until the flavor is just right for you. And, it’s good to start with a nice smoothie base consisting of some liquid (I prefer almond milk) and some fruit (fresh, frozen or both). If you are looking for a recipe, I’ve compiled quite the list of delicious banana-free smoothies (yes, mine won’t have bananas in them, but yes, they are good for you!) Make sure you read your nutrition labels as this list isn’t inclusive of all nutrients nor serving sizes.
Flax seed will add fat, fiber, some protein, magnesium, and iron.

Walnuts will add fat, fiber, vitamin B-6 and magnesium.
Almond butter will add fat, protein, fiber, calcium, iron.
Wheatgrass will add potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium, and magnesium.
Avocado will add fat, potassium, protein, vitamin C, vitamin B-6 and magnesium.
Goji Berries/ Wolfberries
Goji berries will add antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and fiber.
Kale will add potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and calcium.
Chewable Vitamin C Tablet
I picked up these NatureMade vitamin C tablets at Walmart. Having watched a smoothie place literally put a tablet in a smoothie to give it a boost, I knew this was perfect. Of course, it will add vitamin C which helps support the immune system. Plus, these tablets will add a bit of orange flavor to your smoothie.
The big thing protein powder adds is protein, but often they are fortified with other vitamins and minerals, depending on the brand.
Spinach will add vitamin A and vitamin C with some magnesium and vitamin B-6.
Oatmeal will add fiber, vitamin A, calcium, iron, vitamin B-6 and magnesium.
Drinking my one smoothie a day really helps with my wellness goals for 2016. It is quick and easy to add nutrients to and also quick and easy to drink. Plus, it gives me what I need to get through carpool, kid drop off and an hour and a half to two hours at the gym. In fact, lunch time usually hits and I’m still not even hungry. By adding Nature Made vitamin C from Walmart, I’m able to help support my immune system.
