Soccer has been interesting for our girls. The season starts with so much excitement and energy. They are ready to go.
They get those tiny uniforms and the little cleats and shin guards and can’t contain themselves. Then they get to practice.
They realize that it’s a little more work. There is running and kicking and the dreaded listening to directions and rules and well, they sort of lose their interest.
Those first couple games (okay, almost all of them) involve them either standing on the field, wondering off, coming to the sideline to talk to mom and dad or even picking flowers and grass. Gotta love the attention span of a 3-4 year old. But we persevered. All of us. It was hard to keep going back week after week, but we stood firm.
The balance between wanting them to enjoy it, but not letting them quit is hard. We just kept up with the practicing and playing and encouraging.
Then, one day it happened, she finally decided she wanted to play. And she did (as long as she was goalie). It started to mesh for her. She was happy she was playing. We were happy she was playing and enjoying it…and I might have needed a Kleenex.
To customize your own Kleenex oval, please check out the Kleenex site. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

My son wanted to quit football as soon as we started but I told him we finish what we start. Now we only have one more week of it and he is playing his heart out….probably because he knows he won’t be back.

Funny how that happens, isn’t it? We’ve got two more weeks here..wonder how it will pan out.

No kidding. They sure are cute in their little soccer outfits.
Is this #2 with a pony? She’s so darn cute in the uniform. Please get some video of one of the games if possible.
Nope, it’s from last year. It’s #1.
I’ll have to see about video.

She looks so adorable out there! I always wonder how we’ll decide when to let Baby S quit something and when to encourage him to give it a try longer.

I think you have to encourage for a while, and then after a season allow them to decide?
My just-turned 5 year old is in dance and she’s been kind of the same way. She loves it, but sometimes doesn’t want to go. Her older cousin does soccer and so my daughter has been asking about soccer now too. I’ll think we’ll try a short little “skills” soccer class this winter and see if she wants to try to be on a team next year!
That’s a good plan. We actually did the same thing and she was super excited about it!
