With the holidays approaching, it’s always good to do a mental and physical check of things around the house and car to make sure things are safe. And, when setting everything up for the holidays, it’s good to keep safety in mind with little kids.

Each year, I’m still surprised at what our kids get into even after I thought I had considered all things safety. Of course, you still want to keep in mind all of the baby safety tips day-in and day-out!

7 holiday safety tips

The cords and outlets

Often, there are extension cords and light cords all over the house. Make sure they are completely out of sight and safety secured. Not only is the electricity part dangers, but the cords pose a strangulation risk.

The tree

We decorate our tree with our kids in mind. We don’t even put any glass ornaments on it anymore. In fact, the kids pretty much do all of the tree decorating. We also place a gate around the tree to keep curious climbers from toppling the tree and making a dangerous situation.

Also, if you have a live tree make sure you are watering it regularly so that you don’t have a fire hazard in your house.

The lights

Make sure you check your holiday lights regularly. Look at both the lights on your tree and the lights on the house to check for exposed or frayed wires, loose connections and broken sockets.

The plants

A lot of holiday plants are very nice. However, there are some that are poisonous like mistletoe berries, holly berry and Jerusalem cherry. Make sure you keep these plants out of reach of your children and animals.

The small pieces

Makes sure you keep an eye out for small pieces to new toys or decorations as well as small button batteries and magnets. These become dangerous quickly when ingested.

The oven and stove

There is a lot of holiday cooking with a lot of kitchen distractions. Make sure to use the back burner on your store when possible and turn the handles away from the edge. Make sure when using the oven to open the door carefully and keep a clear space from little curious hands trying to reach in and “help.”

The cleaning supplies and detergents

The holidays often mean I’m in cleaning mode because we will have visitors. But, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t remain vigilant.  Make sure that cleaning supplies and laundry detergent packets are safely placed in a locked cabinet or one that is out of reach of children. And, make sure to keep everything in its originally labelled containers. In 2015 alone, there have been over 10,000 exposures to liquid laundry packets in children under 5. Be sure you are taking the proper safety precautions to keep your entire family safe during the hectic and exciting time during the holidays. Take the KEY pledge to acknowledge and remember that you will safely store all of your liquid laundry packets. You can also find educational materials on ACI’s website, like their new PSA and infographic.
