Enjoying the journey
We’ve made some amazing memories the last couple years with all of the travel we have done, from driving to Michigan, Texas and Florida, to flying across the country to Los Angeles. Sometimes, the best memories are made in the little moments, the in-between, the unplanned, the journey.
It would seem that about half of our trips and vacations lately are spent journeying to our destination. So, why not enjoy those moments just as much as when we get there!
How do we encourage “enjoying the journey?”
Don’t take yourself too seriously. Relax. Take a deep breath. Have fun.
Always stop to get a selfie. An us-ie? A family-ie?
Do a countdown through the states or cities.
Try not to stress when things don’t go as planned, if you do, it’s okay to roll down the window and let out a cathartic scream!
Be a tourist, even if it’s in the town in which you grew up.
Take time to stop and check out the scenery.
We are so excited to be journeying to the Mom It Forward Family Forward conference at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at the end of the month with our family! We will enjoy the 8 hour car journey there and all fun once we get to Orlando!
When we stop and really take a moment to think about everything that our kids see, it helps relieve the stress and allows us to have all of the fun.
These are great tips. Sometimes we can get so caught up in the destination that we don’t enjoy the journey.
It makes me sing that Aerosmith song with the lyrics “life’s a journey, not a destination!” It’s been in my head all day!
OMG, I DO stress when things don’t go as planned, but most of it is in my own head and it always seems to work itself out – so I end up worrying for nothing usually!
I think that’s the thing, it’s us moms worrying and planning and stressing so much that we beat ourselves up if it doesn’t go how we’ve planned. And, a lot of the time, I end up enjoying the unplanned even more!
Some great tips for the family travel. We haven’t done too much with both kids as of yet. Maybe in a year or two when they can take being in the car for a longer period of time.
Oh, you can totally do it! Two years ago, we drove to Michigan with our then 4 month old daughter (14 hours), and this year, we drove to Houston (14 hours) with our then 6 month old daughter. There was a little fussing at some points, but we made it and had fun!
Great post and very good ideas
Ooooh, I like an “us-ie” 🙂 We take a lot of those.
And I’m about to drive up to DC and back with the kids tomorrow so this was a good reminder for me to go with the flow.
Us-ies are good! I just need my hubby to have Bradley Cooper-like arm length to get us all in the picture!
Have a great drive!
Great tips for how to enjoy the journey. I can’t wait to see you there!
Can’t wait to see you there! We’ll have to talk about what time you are leaving?
I agree on the be a tourist in your hometown…
there are things we tend to take for granted growing up there…
can’t wait to hear about your trip
It took us like 5 years to start adventuring around Atlanta…and we are still discovering new things and places we haven’t been!
I love this! I am glad that you had a good time! It is so important to enjoy the journey!
We’ll be enjoying the journey again next week! Woohoo! Most well travelled baby in our family!
Good luck with the travel! Enjoying the Journey is such a good reminder.
Thank you! They’ve been pretty good so far! It’s all about the memories, right?
Great advice. Especially for me. I do need to take a breath many times and just let things go.
Well done!
We can all use that advice, I think! Always!
We haven’t taken any big trips this summer. Lots of little day trips. Sometimes I have to turn off the phone and not take a picture. Just enjoy the moment and being in the moment with the kids.
What fun that you guys are doing that as a family! We’re taking off on a 5.5 hour drive tomorrow morning for Lake Placid, NY! We’ll have to stop and take some selfies! 🙂
We love going on road trips and definitely take time to enjoy the journey by stopping along the way! Have a great trip to Family Forward! I wish I could be joining you there this year but it falls right at the start of school for us! Maybe I’ll see you there next year!
I love this! We try and live by the “always be a tourist” mentality and make a day out of going just about everywhere. Sunday we went mini golfing in Hanover and then went to eat in Hingham, I love enjoying the smaller days too.
Yes! It’s all about the journey.
I love that sign into Texas! 😉
You are going to have SO MUCH FUN!
I try REALLY hard not to stress when things don’t go as planned but I usually fail.
You look like you have a really fun family. I am so excited to get to know you better at the family forward retreat. See you soon.
I love the encouragement to enjoy the journey… even if it’s right where you live. Sometimes, we forget all the wonder and amazing things that are right around us.
I’m soooo looking forward to seeing your family this week!
