Eyes….the two most important orbs on our body

Eyes. So very important to us. We often take them for granted. Until they start to fail us!

My eyes started failing me somewhere around the end of 5th grade. Just a little fuzz and a little squint. My mom had me wait until summer was over and I got these bad boys (which apparently also came with a terrible sweater, a perm and horrible eye makeup…not shown? The zit I photoshopped out!)

And, they have continued to be a terrible burden ever since. I have to get an eye exam every year and at least get new glasses or contacts. I’m blind. Okay, not really, or close to legally blind, but my alarm clock numbers are about 5 inches tall and I have to be on top of it to read them.

Of course, right now, my girls think its funny when I wear my glasses and they totally don’t understand the idea of not being able to see. And, I hope that they never do, but the reality is, with Mr. Serious needing glasses in second grade (thanks to LASIK, he doesn’t anymore), and me soon after, at least one of them will need some sort of vision correction.

Because our oldest two had tear duct surgery, they also had very extensive vision exams.

We know it’s very important to have annual eye exams at all ages because the doctors can often spot an issue before we see one. I know how terrible it is to not see, but, you really don’t realize it until you get to see again!

We don’t currently have vision insurance, but as the girls get older, it is definitely something we will consider adding to our benefits.  It can help us all keep our eyes healthy with highly credentialed doctors who provide the most thorough exams. Also, vision insurance can help us save money! The average VSP member saves approximately $320 each year with vision insurance!

Do you need vision correction? At what age did you start wearing glasses or contacts?

  4. I need to get my eyes checked (and we have the insurance coverage for it!) but I keep putting it off. 😐

    1. Yes, you do! Especially since you pay for the coverage:) Let this be your reminder to schedule an appointment!

  5. I started wearing glasses in high school. My first pair looked a lot like yours! Luckily, I still wear them only part-time – for TV, driving at night, going to the movies… I do see my eye doctor every two years like clockwork.

    1. I can’t even imagine only having to wear them certain times…my vision is terrible!

  6. Apparently my vision has improved slightly over the past two years. Now I’m pregnant again so I need to wait but as soon as I can, I will be getting my eyes checked again! Definitely need new glasses.

  7. When I was little, I had a lazy eye. I had two surgeries to correct it. After that, my vision was 20/20. Now that I’m getting older, though, I need reading glasses for just about everything. I think years of staring at a computer screen for work did a number on my eyes.

    1. You are fortunate that you had 20/20 for so long. My MIL uses one contact I think to correct for reading and apparently your brain adjusts? Pretty cool.

  8. I got lucky and didn’t need glasses til in my mid 20’s and now in my mid 30’s my vision is still actually pretty good. I usually don’t need to wear my glasses except for night driving. My husband has to wear contacts or he can’t see at all. Hopefully soon he’ll be having Lasik. Vision insurance is definitely very important to us for keeping up on eye exams.

    1. And, I think a lot of vision insurance plans get you discounts on LASIK, too!

  9. Vision care is SO expensive! I’m glad there is an option for coverage!

  10. My Grandfather had early vision loss due to macular degeneration. It always made me appreciate good sight so much more.

  11. I have had glasses since I was eleven, however, I believe I needed them years before. My parent’s just never had the money for regular check-ups and I never told them I had issues. Now I am almost as blind as a bat and I would love to have corrective surgery. Maybe one day in the future! 🙂

  12. I started wearing glasses in high school now I switched between glasses and contact so I definitely know the importance of vision insurance.

  13. I do wear contacts. Glasses just don’t feel comfortable to me but I use them when I want a rest from the contacts.

    1. I’m the same way. I wear my contacts like 90% of the time, but I like having glasses as a backup!

  14. I got my first pair of glasses when I was 12 – but needed them way before that, I just didn’t realize it. My husband has glasses as well, so it was no surprise to us when our daughter needed them when she was 7. We thankfully have fantastic vision insurance, I sure hope that doesn’t change in the future, with three of us in glasses/contacts it adds up quickly when we have prescription changes.

    1. I can only imagine. I know it’s going to sky rocket for us when the girls start to need them!
