She held my hand

“Go upstairs and pick out a dress you want to wear and change into it” I said.

“A dress? Where are we going? Why do I need a dress?” She asked with even more questions coming.

She tried on 4 different dresses before deciding on one I pulled out of the clean laundry. “This one is my favorite. It’s perfect.”

I still hadn’t divulged where we were going. But, she knew something fun was coming. I asked her to grab a dress for her sister, too. “I got it mommy. I think she’ll like this one.”

The oldest sister was picked up, and the plans were leaked, “We are going to see The Little Mermaid!” Squeals in duplicate (and two little clueless sisters). The oldest thought I won tickets on the radio because she kept hearing commercials, but no, we were invited to a media night. They were so excited.

“I packed you lunches, girls, because we won’t have time to go home and eat dinner.” “Thank you, mommy!”

The car ride was riddled with eating and silence. Excitement meets trepidation. We parked the car and make the walk over to The Fox Theatre.

“This is so fancy and big.” “Wow, this is amazing!” said in the voice of Anna from Frozen, I’m sure!

We were directed to our seats on the wrong aisle, so we found ourselves walking all the way to the front and got to peak at the orchestra pit. “That’s where all of the music for the show is made.” It really clicked that this was all “real” and live.

The Little Mermaid

“Look at that blue water. It’s moving and bubbling.”

We had to take a moment to get a picture of our night out.

Girls night out

The music started with a medley of the songs and the curtain opened. They were stunned into silence. Then, my sweet little almost-Kindergartener reached over and grabbed my hand. I thought it was a fluke, but after every applause for the amazing singing, she reached back over and found it. And, I melted into a puddle on the floor.

“My favorite part is when Ariel got legs. The first time, not the second time.”

“Mine, too.”

The Little Mermaid

We walked back to the car hand-in-hand and I marked the day on the calendar as one of the best days with my big girls.

If you get a chance, you must go see The Little Mermaid. The singing and music is phenomenal. The cast is perfect. Sebastian has just the right action and movements, and is the character from the movie to a T. Ursula isn’t scary at all like the movie. I would say she stole the show. Or maybe it is the tap-dancing Scuttle.

The story line has some variations from the movie, but I won’t spoil those for you. Overall, it’s the same story of Ariel, Flounder, Scuttle, Sebastian and Prince Eric.

Atlantans, there are still some tickets left through July 13, 2014, but keep an eye on the other Broadway in Atlanta productions like Mamma Mia in September, Phantom of the Opera in October, Dirty Dancing in November, and Newsies in late January 2015. There is always something great to see with Broadway in Atlanta and the Fabulous Fox Theatre!

We received tickets to the show. All thoughts are our own.
