The most important meal of the day

It was always stressed to me when I was growing up that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Admittedly, I didn’t always believe that, and I took it for granted that I had a breakfast option available to me everyday. But, it truly is the most important one (even if it does have a couple chocolate chips in it).

Our girls have breakfast every morning. No questions asked (however, they wouldn’t let us go more than ten minutes without eating). Breakfast gets the day going. It nourishes the body and helps keep the brain awake. It helps fuel them until lunch time and keeps them alert.

When I was teaching, it was never more evident how important breakfast was. I would have students that would come late to the first class of the day because they were getting breakfast right off the bus. I was upset until I learned that this was often the first meal they had after their lunch at school. They were hungry and needing nourishment. I also quickly saw when they didn’t get that breakfast. They were sluggish. They weren’t as responsive. They just weren’t in a ready-to-learn state-of-mind.

By the time the second class rolled around at 10am, it was really obvious who either had no breakfast, or had candy or chips for breakfast. They would try to sleep in class. Their vigor wasn’t the same. They were just down and ready for some fuel to keep their body going. Even when it came time for a test or evaluation, they were just different.

Often times, I would have “extras” laying around for the kids I knew just weren’t getting what they needed. Sometimes, students would flat out ask for something I didn’t have time to finish from my breakfast. Their bodies knew what they needed, it was just if they chose to listen or not.

In the program’s third year, Kellogg’s Share Breakfast will share one million breakfasts* with kids in need through grants to schools or school districts to help them increase their participation in school breakfast programs. I’m fairly certain the school I worked at either took advantage of programs like this. Every little bit helps. Sometimes, these students only get breakfast and lunch each day.

Taye Diggs has partnered with Kellogg’s to support the Share Breakfast campaign. “Just imagine what kids across the country could accomplish if they each had a great start every day. That’s why I am partnering with Kellogg’s and the Share Breakfast program to help make this a reality,” said Diggs. “Join me in raising one million breakfasts to help get America’s kids the start they deserve.”

I’m “sharing” breakfast with others by doing the following tasks. Want to help support the cause? You can “share” breakfast with others by:

Kellogg's Share Breakfast

* Each time you share, Kellogg will donate the monetary equivalent of a school breakfast shared. Kellogg will donate up to $250,000 – the equivalent of 1.25 million school breakfasts shared. Program ends 4/15/2013.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Kellogg’s. I received a product sample as well as a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

It’s so great that they are doing this!! Pre-babies I worked for a food bank and it is devastating what children (especially) are dealing with. It just breaks my heart.

I don’t understand how anyone can send their child to school without breakfast.

    1. I hope it’s not because they want to, but because they don’t have enough food to do it. Not that I hope any kid goes without….

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Eating a good breakfast helps you not eat as much through the day. It also jump starts your metabolism.
