The one where I write a BIG FAT check, and didn’t get anything in return

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

Mr. Serious has been bugging me about finishing up our taxes.  He was waiting for my income from Krizzy Designs.

I didn’t want to do them.  I knew it wasn’t going to go well.

Nobody withholds your taxes for you when you are your own employer.

I had grand dreams.  Dreams that included something new and fancy.

A combination “your business is doing well” and “Happy 30th birthday!” gift/prize/reward.

Mac Book Pro

That, my bloggy friends is a beautiful Mac Book Pro.

(Like I needed to tell you all that.)

That was my dream.

And as we completed our taxes, the refund got smaller quickly, and then after one entry, jumped to a “federal taxes owed” amount.

Then, that amount grew and grew.

So now, instead of a nice business purchase and birthday present, we wrote a freakishly large, ridiculously huge check to Uncle Sam (I kid you not, almost the exact amount of that Mac Book Pro).

Dear Uncle Sam.  You are welcome.  Ever heard of the Fair Tax?  Just saying…

One day, I will get a piece of the apple company in my home.

In the meantime, I have a feeling we just purchased an overpriced binder for a government official.  Because we know the government is sooo good at spending money and making reasonable purchases.

But, but, but…we are getting a $46 refund from the state of Georgia.

What should I do with that?

  1. Taxes are no fun. A couple of years ago, we had to pay a ridiculous amount of money to uncle Sam AFTER we got the withdrawals at work. So frustrating.

    1. Oh, we get withdraws from work, too! Both of us…and we still owed more.

  2. Ugh. The word “tax” just gives me the skin crawlies.

    1. Oh, me,too….that’s why I didn’t want to file them!

  3. Oh, that’s so sad……….darn those taxes….opening up a new Mac anything would be heaven, eh? (I’m a sucker for the way they pack everything, let alone the coolness of their products!)…….

I need to get my taxes done…….congrats on getting money back from the state. In Mass, that’s hard to do!……that’s why it’s called Taxachuesetts……..lol……

    1. Oh, I’ve never even seen the packaging to know how cool it is!

  4. Aww I’m sorry to hear you owe this year! I don’t get much back, though I don’t make much working part-time retail either….maybe you could save your blog designing money for that Mac Book Pro??

    Love, Mere

    1. I wish I could…but that money goes into our budget:) Maybe I can convince Mr. Serious to let me save it a couple months!

    1. I realized we had to pay $89 to file, so, that’s still -$43! Nevermind.

  5. You could buy 46 apples! :OP Yeah taxes have been no fair this year – somehow we ended up owing the feds money, too – what gives??

    1. Stupid feds! I don’t know, but I sure want to figure it out.

  6. Taxes totally blow! Our 1st year married we had to pay and it fought us totally off guard! Funny how they do that! Birthday dinner with that $46!! You earned it!! 🙂

    1. Yeah, forgot that we had to pay to file, so we are still in the red. Boo!

  7. I hate taxes! HATE. We are taxed pretty high here in Canada. I guess the good thing is that we do have free universal health care, so I can’t reallllly complain, but still. I wish I could see something come back to me just once, you know? By the way, the MacBook Pro is sweet. My hubs has one AND his work just bought him a MacBook Air. Or whatever it’s called. I am in love with it and want my own!

    1. Yeah…I can dream right?

No universal health care and high taxes? Crap. We definitely aren’t rich.

  8. I totally feel your pain. Even with the added tax deduction, we still had a HUGE payment (like 3 macbook pros). Three years in a row. If it were for my husband’s school tuition and daycare expenses, we would’ve been in some serious trouble … again.

    1. Oh, we had daycare expenses, too! And, they are deducted from our paycheck. It really stinks. Like super huge stinks.

  9. LOL, and we are getting a $61 check from Minnesota, just found out today. Unfortunately, we paid our tax person $300 or so to tell us this.

(We did get something from Federal and property tax though, I shouldn’t complain!)

    Maybe next year 🙂

    1. You reminded me we paid $89 to file, so we are still in the red!

    1. No..I still make money off the business, but it raised us to another tax bracket (we must have been close) so we were in the wrong withholdings category.

      Major suckage.

  10. Stupid taxes. Blah. 🙁

  11. Dear, I am in that boat as well. Well not as serious as getting $46, but oh dear. We were meant to get some money back from the state of WV, only for them to write a letter saying we are not getting any back and that we are indeed owing. I went beserk!

  12. As a self-employed person there are lots of things you can claim on your taxes such as your electricity bill, internet, some of your mortgage, mileage, etc. Just thought I would pass that along! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Nicole. We did almost all of those! It’s not like I made that much or we are rich. Grrr…
