Thirsties Duo Diaper Review and Giveaway

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

Here we are at 6 months of cloth diapering and still going strong with E. What I haven’t mentioned lately is that there is still another bigger kid in the house that wears a diaper at night. After many a wet beds from the disposable variety, we decided to switch her to cloth, too.

Amazingly, she’s pushing 40lbs and will be 4 years old in two months, but she fits in the Thirsties Duo Diaper Size 2 (which they say is for about 18-40lbs and/or 9-36 months). It has two sets of snaps to allow for three different rise settings. And then two snaps on each side (or you can do the hook and loop route, which is like Velcro, but I don’t like the stuff). I had to try out the new argyle prints. This is Scottish storm. It is geared at a more boyish pattern, but I definitely think it’s more gender neutral. This picture is pretty true to life color. I think it’s supposed to be brown, but it looks more magenta to me.

The Duo Diaper is a pocket diaper. But, it’s different than many other pockets in that it opens in the front and the back, so you don’t have to remove the insert before washing…every time, that guy has agitated out, no problem! It also has their feature leg gussets to help everything stay in.

The sleeve is a microfleece sleeve which is very soft and keeps moisture off the kiddo’s skin. (so, no waking in the middle of the night because they are wet for the little ones…the big ones, that’s a different story, but we won’t get into that.

The duo insert is also unique to other pocket diapers I’ve tried. The Thirsties specialty inserts has two layers of serged microfiber terry snapped together with five serged layers of hemp jersey for a total of seven thirsty layers.  The microfiber terry absorbs quickly resting closest to your baby’s skin (beneath the microfleece sleeve, you don’t want microfiber on skin) and the hemp is a stable (and slower) absorber that pairs perfectly behind the microfiber terry by adding more absorbency and preventing compression leaking.

This is the duo insert with the microfiber on top.

I detached a snap on one end so you could see them and how they worked (for some reason, I didn’t quite grasp this from looking at descriptions on other sites).

Now, hemp will shrink after washing and drying (and must be prepped with at least 3-5 wash dry cycles to remove the natural oils). This is before washing. They’ve actually accounted for the shrinkage,

because after a couple washes, you can see they are practically the same size now (the hemp looks bigger here, but my angle must have been funny because they look the same size to me.

On to the fit. On the big kid. Honestly, no idea how tall she is, but she’s almost four and wears 4T-5T clothes. She’s pretty tall. And, pretty close to 40lbs.

In my experience, Thirsties seem to have a lower rise than other diapers. This is with the largest rise setting. But, it fits her great and there are still two more snaps to go on the waist.

Most importantly, when she does pee, she’s a heavy wetter. And, we’ve had zero leaks with this as is. Just the duo insert and it’s all she needs.

Head over to their site and request a catalog for yourself to see all of the awesome diapers and products Thirsties has. And, make sure to like them on facebook. They always have great discussion and tips about cloth diapering and care.

  3. So, how do you think this would work on a 6 month old? I know thirsties has two sizes available, so you may not be able to use it for your youngest.

    1. Hi Ashley-So, I haven’t tried this one on her yet (my lo is 6 months old, too). I think it would be too big. I have no idea how much she weighs, but I think she’s pretty average for a 6 month old. I have a size 1 duo diaper that still fits her on the second rise setting.

However, I also have some of the duo wraps (which are just a cover). Depending on the fitted diaper underneath it, she can fit in a size 2 snapped up as tight as it goes. Hope that helps.

(PS Their AIO seem to run smaller in my opinion, so you could probably size up for that).
