Top 5 New Baby Must Haves

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

Since I’ve done this new mom thing a time or two, okay, or four. I’d like to think I have a pretty good grasp on what things you’ll need for a new baby. These top 5 new baby must haves work for all moms and all babies. Breastfed, bottle-fed, disposable-diapered, cloth-diapered, adoptive mom or dad, biological mom. You get the idea. All things that a parent will need for a new baby. (I didn’t include the obvious like a carseat. There are so many things that go into deciding which will work best for you and your vehicle….but hey, you have to have a carseat!)

1. Baby Bath Tub

After trying out several other ones, and literally throwing them away, we’ve kept the EuroBath/Prima Bath for our last three girls. Yes, it’s on the bigger side, but it makes bath time so much better. You can see NE and B’s first bath in it!

2. The Miracle Blanket

We have swaddled all of our girls. It helps them sleep. It calms them. It relaxes them. We’ve tried them all. Some of them have worked for us at various stages and to varying degrees, but hands down, our favorite is the The Miracle Blanket. It’s like it has two layers of swaddle-breaking protection. While our kids can get out of the others, they are stuck in this one. Baby-straight-jacket wins! (See my Miracle Blanket review here.)

3. Little Lounger

Forget having the bassinet in your room. Or a bigger pack n play. We put the Little Lounger right next to our bed. Our babies can sleep in it, they are easy to reach, and I can rock them or turn on vibrations to help them get back to sleep. (Also, notice, she’s in yet another Miracle Blanket). See my full Graco Little Lounger Review including a video review of all of the features.

4. Noise Machine

Our house is loud. With two adults and four kids in three bedrooms we have to be able to cover up that noise while little people sleep. We actually have three of these in our house. One in every bedroom. The Noise Machine has traveled with us on every trip and vacation. It’s almost always on white noise, and our two year old actually asks for it before her nap and bedtime. When we first turn it on, it tends to calm even the most upset of babies.

5. Baby carrier

There are a ton of choices for a baby carrier. My favorites are soft structure/buckle carriers because pretty much anybody can wear it and I can get you using it in about 30 seconds. I’ve tried the Ergo, Boba 4G and the LILLEbaby. (You can see my Ergo Review, Boba 4G Review, and LILLEbaby review). The LILLEbaby is my favorite, hands down! Buy your LILLEbaby carrier at LILLEbaby.com or on Amazon.com.

I wish somebody would have told me about carriers with my first. And, not just any carrier, but a carrier that ensures proper positioning of baby to keep their hips properly aligned. All of these are super comfortable, easy to use and position baby in the right way. Babies 2-4 have/are still worn in these carriers almost daily.

  1. We had that Conair sound machine and ran it into the ground after 3 years. Then replaced it.
For my child who thinks “sleep is for suckers,” it’s a must-have!

    1. Our first one is actually 7 years old and going strong!! Well, it’s the alarm clock one, but they didn’t have the just sound one then!

  2. Good list…although I have to giggle a litte. Out of those I only used one! Guess that goes go to show how different every baby and every parent is!

    1. I’m going to guess…the white noise? I know you had tummy sleepers, so no swaddle. And, I don’t think those loungers/sleepers were out when you had your three. And, I don’t think I ever saw you have a carrier….so, yes, white noise.

  3. I have got to completely agree with the Ergo Baby. That was my favorite carrier. I got it with my 4th to review and used it up until he was 3 and a shoulder injury kept me from carrying him easily.

    Loved the swaddlers!

I think I’m one of the few moms who always bought a new baby bath with each kid and then ended up using it once or twice. 😀 Since they were newborns, my littles started out taking a shower with me. My husband would stand with the baby as I got in the shower, then he would pass the baby to me. He’d wash them while I held. I just never got comfortable with a slippery baby in the baby bath. I know other moms are pros at it, but I always felt more comfortable holding on with 2 hands in the cradle hold while my husband did the rest of the work.

    1. I once carried my 4 year old in the Ergo when she was absolutely done when we were out.

That’s funny about the bath…yeah, they are slippery, but I always felt nervous trying to shower with them. But, I know so many people prefer it! You do what works, right?

  4. For me a sleep sack and a boppy are two more must haves – and a nice blanket / swing / something to lay them down on.

    1. We’ve used sleep sacks, but find with the swaddle blankets our girls get too hot. Yeah, a swing is a good one, too..I was just trying to go bare-bones and picked the lounger over a swing or blanket.

And, yes to a nursing pillow:)

  5. Our Little Lounger is probably the top of my “must have” list. That thing has been very well used in the 3 months since I’ve had my baby boy!

    1. Weren’t we JUST HERE learning about this? And here we have almost 3 month olds?

Seriously, we use it every night still. We haven’t moved her to a shared room yet, so she’ll be in it forever!

      1. Mine turned 3 months today – It is crazy!! And yes, he still sleeps in his every night too.

  6. All of these were so useful when Little Man was a baby…except we never got a bathtub…he just took showers with us. This is such a fantastic list though…I couldn’t live without the noise machine and miracle blanket…that’s the only way we could get Little Man to sleep at night!

    1. I don’t think I’ve ever showered with my girls..I get so nervous I’ll drop them.

And, yes to the noise and blanket! Miracles, indeed.

  7. Great list!! That lounger looks great! I don’t know what I would do without baby wearing! Loved the miracle blanket with baby #1 and #2. Somehow baby #3 could bust out of it so I had to use the woobie with him. Love, love that swaddle blanket.

    1. I’ve thought of picking up a woobie. #4 is definitely the strongest. She broke out of the velcro ones at like 2 weeks.

  8. Number four is my favourite!! my kids love music to go to sleep!!

    1. Would you believe we’ve never used the music on it? Now my older kids like to listen to music to go to bed, but their aunt sent a really old iphone and docking station.

      Me, I like quiet:)

  9. They’ve come so far with carriers and I wish I had more comfortable choices when my kids were little! I’d add a monitor just because I relied on it so much with infants! I want a noise machine for MY room, we usually have sports talk radio on all night for my hub!

    1. Agreed…with my oldest, either there weren’t these great choices, or they were so non-mainstream that nobody knew about them (me included).

I’d get a machine for my room..or some headphones for my hubby! That would drive me crazy!

  10. I would have to agree I would have a white noise machine & swaddle blanket in my top 5 too. Once I hit babies 2/3/4 there was always a baby in my wrap!

    1. Yep, definitely a mom of more than one has to have a wrap! I actually had one with the first, but I didn’t have to learn how to use it , so I didn’t.

  11. That noise machine looks awesome! I recommend white noise to new parents because it really works.

  12. Our swing was indispensable with both of our kids. It was so soothing for both of them and cut down on lots or crying!

    1. A swing is like 5a…I was trying to pick between that and the lounger:)

  13. Will have to keep this list close by. Everyone at my house is asking for a baby. The noise machine maybe something I get for myself I can’t sleep when there is no sounds!

    1. I know, right? E gets in it and says “night night”. Stinker!

  14. the noise machine sounds great.

I love that the blanket has two layers of swaddle-breaking protection and the little lounger is awesome! Baby would love this.

Good list! I think Baby Bath Tub and Baby Miracle Blanket is necessary!
