Why you should try Essential Oils

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. I MAY EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES.

When I can and feel it’s a good fit for my family, I try to do things as naturally and green as possible. We have and continue use cloth diapers for our babies. I use and make my own cleaning solutions (when I have time) and use cloth napkins and washcloths. And I had my massage oils and candles ready for my accidental home birth.

Why I have decided to take the leap

When I found myself reaching for a head and neck tension product that had peppermint oil (and a bunch of other weird stuff in it), I thought it would make a lot more sense to look directly into pure essential oils for my head and neck tension. And the more I used them, the more I liked them. There are so many different uses and they make sense in my life.

After test out many brands for various uses, I decided to go with Young Living Essential Oils purchase a Premium Starter Kit. I’m impressed with their Seed to Seal process, their testing and their ethics. And, honestly, I’ve found I just prefer the scents of their oils over the other brands.

What you can do with Essential Oils

My favorite use is to diffuse essential oils. I put a couple drops in water in my diffuser and let the aroma fill the air. At night, lavender is calming and relaxing for both me and my girls. During the day, lemon and citrus fresh are invigorating and rejuvenating.

You can also dilute the oils and put them on your skin, behind your ears, on the soles your feet and more. Plus, they make a great way to naturally scent bath products and crafts. I have and do use peppermint oil on my temples and behind my ears. And StressAway really helped me not get upset when my daughter deleted an entire blog post (I’m still scratching my head on that one!)

And surprisingly, the combination of lemon, peppermint and lavender makes a great wellness mix.

What I learned About Essential Oils

Young Living has a Seed to Seal 5-step process. From the time the seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in a bottle, they apply the most rigorous quality controls to ensure the oils are received exactly the way nature intended. They use five steps; seed, cultivate, distill, test, seal. (And, can I say I think it’s pretty cool that I actually did some distillations and GC/MS tests in college and graduate school?)

I’ve learned that they can help with my mood (or my girls’) and enhance my body’s immune system. I’ve also learned that I like the smell of lavender and I didn’t think I did. Turns out it’s just the chemical smell associated with most unpure lavender products.

Essential Oils Are For Everybody

There are so many uses and applications for essential oils in every person’s life. With all of the chemicals we are exposed to, it’s nice to have chemical-free and natural options.

  1. I’ve only ever experimented with Tea Tree Oil since it’s a killer acne treatment but I’m very curious to learn more. Thanks for the details! I love the way the warmer looks, it has a very pretty design.

    1. I’ll have to try the tea tree oil as my skin is in a funky place right now!

It’s actually not a warmer, but a diffuser (sort of like a humidifier, but much less humid). You add water and a couple drops oil and the oil/smell is diffused into the air.

  2. I have been using the YL oils since December and I really love incorporating them into our family routine. Just this week I used them to help treat conjunctivitis and a cough.

  3. Hmm so it gives your room a light scent without humidy? I will have to look into it.

    1. Yes, a very light scent and it’s maybe like 2-4 oz of water over 4 hours, so I notice no added humidity at all! Plus, since it’s pure, I don’t get a headache like I would from artificial smells!

  4. Everyone keeps telling me I need them for my dry, cracked hands. I think I need to give them a try! This premium kit looks really good for a beginner like me!

    1. What a great idea! Yes, it really is a great starting place! And before you know it, you are hooked!

Yes peppermint is great for headaches.
    thanks for a great post

    1. You are the second person to tell me about valor, but I haven’t tried it! I will add it to my next order!

  6. Talk about essential oils has been popping up in my social network feeds for the past month or so, and I’ve been curious about all the hype. I’m always nervous about trying oils since my son and I have allergies, and fragrances often aggravate our asthma. That being said, I prefer homeopathy whenever possible, so I’m at a bit of a crossroads. I’m not sure what to do yet, but I’m certainly intrigued after reading your post.

    1. I have a ton of issues with fragrances and allergies, but nothing with these. Fragrances are in a completely different world in comparison.

They do a have a handy chart, too showing allergen listings (I know there are a couple products with gluten, but I think there are only like 2 oils, for example).

I’m happy to talk more about it with you! I was at a crossroads for a while.

      1. Thanks!

Way impressed that allergens are listed! It never would have occurred to me that essential oils could contain gluten, which would be a no-no in our home.

        Stay tuned 🙂

        1. Me, either. And most are totally okay! I actually have a file with all of the possible allergens, etc. But, Young Living is very diligent!

    1. I’ve started incorporating them into my cleaning! I really like diffusing them and using some on my skin (because that olive oil burn was no joke!)

  7. Oh I have heard so much about essential oils, but have never used them before. I love that you use the peppermint. I would love to try that!

    1. I’d love to talk more with you about them! I just used them Friday night!
