How not to read a nutrition label-WW
Since we are Shredding our way to leaner, healthier selves, Mr. Serious and I are also trying to be more conscious of what we eat. Not necessarily dieting, but more life style changes.
For example, we recently had some homemade chili for dinner. Instead of using our typical ground beef (which we usually by 94/6), Mr. Serious bought all white meat ground turkey. Which looks a little strange when cooking, btw.
Being Texas natives and all, we always eat our chili with Fritos. Sort of Frito-pie-esque. If you’ve never had it that way, you should.
But, with the new, more our nutritionally aware selves, I thought it might be wise to read the label and actually just have a serving of those yummy, corny, crunchy chips with our chili.
I pulled them out and made a quick look of the label. I read that there were only 10 Fritos per serving. This is what 10 sad and lonely Fritos look like, by the way. And, this is on a full sized 12” dinner plate.
When Mr. Serious got home, I told him about the 10 Fritos. So, we both only put 10 Fritos in our chili. I reiterated how sad of a serving size and told him I was going to blog about it. Because we both wanted more.
After dinner, I got out my camera to snap some pictures of these ridiculously small serving sizes.
It was as I was counting out my 10 Fritos, that I took another glance at that label…and I saw it…
Just in case you can’t read that, it says the “Serving Size 1/2 Cup (28g)” and “Servings Per Container About 10.”
Whoops. Major reading fail. It sure made for a less than perfect bowl of chili, too.
Next time, I’m reading closer.
Next time, we’re getting our FULL serving of Fritos (shown with a FULL serving of Cheetos, which is 21 pieces).
And, next time, our chili will taste a little bit lot better!
ETA: I put every single one of those Cheetos and Fritos back into the bag. Can you believe I didn’t eat one of them? Me, either.
Hey FTC, these products were all purchased by us. In fact, the Fritos aren’t even Fritos, they are Kroger’s Cornitos…because, well, they are cheaper and we are on a budget. But, the Cheetos are the real deal and they are delicious. But, if Frito Lay has some moolah for us, we will certainly be willing to chat!

Did you eat your remaining Fritos? I sure would have! I am a Frito in the chili girl also. Although, if Fritos are not available, I will substitute saltines.
Oh no! That is devastating, lol. I totally would've been bummed if a serving size was 10. That is a tiny amount of fritos!
I can't believe you put them all back in the bag! OMG. That is some serious will power, girl! Good for you. Those 10 Fritos were very sad looking, indeed.
i have to have Fritos in my chili too!!! i don't think it's a texas thing! one time josh bought tostito chips for the chili…big difference, they have to be Frito!
HAHAHA!! I would cry if I could only have 10 fritos in my chili! Glad that it's 1/2 a cup instead!
Oh man, serving sizes can be so depressing! My husband can never believe cereal serving sizes!
So, yeah, did you eat the rest of your serving? hahaha
Turkey? Oh, y'all are brave. I don't think this Texan could sacrifice the beef. I get too crossed out during the cooking process. 🙂
That's *grossed* out…just in case you were wondering!
It's not fun when you look at what some of the "serving sizes" actually are! I'm glad to hear that a serving size of fritos is more than just 10 though! I'm in awe of your willpower that got you to put the rest back in the bag! : )
lmao yeah it's easy to get mixed up with some of those labels – I thought the serving size looked rather small, but with some foods it really is that sad!
that cracks me up! I'm glad you finally got your full serving of fritos!
oh and i love fritos in my chili too – yumm!!
I know…it's really not worth eating chips for me. I always want more than the allotted amount! Good for you for being strong and putting them back.
Bwahahaha! I seriously just laughed so hard. Serving sizes are so crazy–I believed that 10 was a serving!
ps-we switched to turkey, too!! We love it. It looked weird at first, but now? We're totally used to it. Congrats on your healthy changes momma!!
xoxo
That's funny 🙂 But I do have to say that I agree with you on the turkey thing. I was really weirded out the first time I made some ground turkey. Good for you guys for sticking with it.
I went back to beef. Ahem. LOL!
Laughing!! The most impresive part is not eating the ones you took pictures of. That is very hard.
I am recording everything i eat in a food journal…and serving sizes do make me a little sad sometimes. I have learned how to truly maximize my calories. If you like spicy, try the wasabi peas. You can have 55 for 130 calories…and they calm the salt cravings. I need a food scale…measuring and counting takes tons of time, but so far it's been worth it. I double check the labels. Also, fitday.com is an awesome site. It's free to have an account and they have everything on there!
i'm doing this silly diet this week & that looks SO dang good!!!!!
That is hilarious!!
Oh how funny. At least, you caught the mistake for next time!
you really put them back in the bag?? sooo proud of you sister. but next time? just go ahead and put them in an envelope and mail them to me. deal?
That is so funny! I have similar reading errors but usually I end up serving too much rather than not enough.
