When I can and feel it’s a good fit for my family, I try to do things as naturally and green as possible. We have and continue use cloth diapers for our babies. I use and make my own cleaning solutions (when I have time) and use cloth napkins and washcloths. And I had my massage oils and candles ready for my accidental home birth.
Why I have decided to take the leap
When I found myself reaching for a head and neck tension product that had peppermint oil (and a bunch of other weird stuff in it), I thought it would make a lot more sense to look directly into pure essential oils for my head and neck tension. And the more I used them, the more I liked them. There are so many different uses and they make sense in my life.
After test out many brands for various uses, I decided to go with Young Living Essential Oils purchase a Premium Starter Kit. I’m impressed with their Seed to Seal process, their testing and their ethics. And, honestly, I’ve found I just prefer the scents of their oils over the other brands.
What you can do with Essential Oils
My favorite use is to diffuse essential oils. I put a couple drops in water in my diffuser and let the aroma fill the air. At night, lavender is calming and relaxing for both me and my girls. During the day, lemon and citrus fresh are invigorating and rejuvenating.
You can also dilute the oils and put them on your skin, behind your ears, on the soles your feet and more. Plus, they make a great way to naturally scent bath products and crafts. I have and do use peppermint oil on my temples and behind my ears. And StressAway really helped me not get upset when my daughter deleted an entire blog post (I’m still scratching my head on that one!)
And surprisingly, the combination of lemon, peppermint and lavender makes a great wellness mix.
What I learned About Essential Oils
Young Living has a Seed to Seal 5-step process. From the time the seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in a bottle, they apply the most rigorous quality controls to ensure the oils are received exactly the way nature intended. They use five steps; seed, cultivate, distill, test, seal. (And, can I say I think it’s pretty cool that I actually did some distillations and GC/MS tests in college and graduate school?)
I’ve learned that they can help with my mood (or my girls’) and enhance my body’s immune system. I’ve also learned that I like the smell of lavender and I didn’t think I did. Turns out it’s just the chemical smell associated with most unpure lavender products.
Essential Oils Are For Everybody
There are so many uses and applications for essential oils in every person’s life. With all of the chemicals we are exposed to, it’s nice to have chemical-free and natural options.
